Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln

Hi I’m Bebe, the kid biographer of the club!

Today is February 12 and it is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday! So, I got a chance to share some of my favorite Lincoln biography books with the book club today. Whenever Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas got together their debates about slavery drew large crowds. Those debates about slavery gave us plenty to talk about in our book club meeting too. So watch the book trailer below and you will see what I mean.

Drake’s Kwanzaa

Happy Kwanzaa!

Hi, I’m Drake and I will be celebrating Kwanzaa with my family this year starting today, December 26 to New Year’s Day.

Kwanzaa is an African American celebration that was started by Dr. Maulana Karenga. During this week my family and people in my neighborhood will get together to celebrate our heritage and all the things that we have done good in our community this year and plan to do better for next year.

NaNoWriMo Young Writers ProgramHave you ever thought about writing a novel? Do you think you can write one in just 30 days? Well if you’ve ever wanted to be a writer and you think that you can write a novel in 30 days, then NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program is the celebration for you!

Okay, you are probably wondering what in the world is the NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program?

Well the Young Writers Program of National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Everyone joining the celebration will begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a novel by midnight, November 30. The word-count goal for the adult program is 50,000 words, but the Young Writers Program allows young participants who are 17 years old and younger to set more reasonable, yet challenging word count goals for completing their novels by November 30.

Today is Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day

The first Monday in September is the day that people in Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone and the Virgin Islands celebrate Labor Day!

For some, this day marks the end of summer because schools and colleges around the country are back in session. So it is time for students to hit the books, study hard and prepare for winter. But for most Americans, Labor Day is a historic day that honors all “working people” and their dedication to the social and economic achievements of this country.

I Scream, You Scream, GRITS Kidz Loves Ice Cream

July is National Ice Cream Month and in 1984, president Ronald Reagan appointed the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day!

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, ice cream is BIG business! About 9% of all milk produced by dairy farmers in our country is used to produce ice cream which generates more than $21 billion dollars in sales each year. WOW! That is a lot of money that will provide jobs for a lot people. We like that idea a lot!
