Drake’s Kwanzaa

Happy Kwanzaa!

Hi, I’m Drake and I will be celebrating Kwanzaa with my family this year starting today, December 26 to New Year’s Day.

Kwanzaa is an African American celebration that was started by Dr. Maulana Karenga. During this week my family and people in my neighborhood will get together to celebrate our heritage and all the things that we have done good in our community this year and plan to do better for next year.

I like Kwanzaa because I get to hang out with all of my cousins and friends, listen to my parents and their friends about our plans for next year, and make “zawadis” (hand-made gifts) to give to everyone on the last day of our celebration. But the best part of Kwanzaa is the food I get to eat and all the cool dances my cousins and I get to do for the adults on the last day of our celebration!

To learn more about Kwanzaa and what I will be doing this week, read some of my favorite books below:

Drake, I hope your Kwanzaa is a wonderful one! I also picked up Mancala and will bring it to the next meeting we have for everyone to play!

    Hi Drake,

Corey here! I learned to play Mancala at Drake’s Kwanzaa party last year. It is a fun game. I cannot wait to play it at our next meeting. Thanks MsGRITS!
