Today is Labor Day!

The first Monday in September is the day that people in Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone and the Virgin Islands celebrate Labor Day!
For some, this day marks the end of summer because schools and colleges around the country are back in session. So it is time for students to hit the books, study hard and prepare for winter. But for most Americans, Labor Day is a historic day that honors all “working people” and their dedication to the social and economic achievements of this country.
But grown-ups are not the only ones who get to celebrate this special day - kids work too! Yes, going to school, studying hard, and making good grades is important and definitely kids’ business. But many young kids work at home doing a variety of chores (like tidying up their rooms and putting away toys and personal items before going outdoors to play, or before going to bed each night) that contribute positively to the social environment of their homes. Many older kids often do chores and work small jobs outside the home (like baby sitting, delivering newspapers or flyers, walking dogs or caring for pets, doing yard work or cutting the grass, or volunteering at their church or other local organizations in their neighborhoods) that contribute to the economic achievements of home as well! In short, kids do work and their work really does make a difference!
Club member, Bebe, says when she thinks about Labor Day, her favorite book, The Riches of Oseola McCarty comes to mind! Oseola McCarty was a, “washer woman,” a person who washed clothes for a living in her community. Washing clothes doesn’t sound like a lot, but by working hard, making sure everyone’s laundry was clean and saving her money through the years, when she died she left $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi to provide scholarships for deserving students in need of financial assistance.
So be sure to add The Riches of Oseola McCarty to your reading list in celebration of Labor Day today or this week!
